Small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol protect against heart attack

A recent study conducted by the Felsenstein Medical Research Center in Israel offers some new insights into the medicinal value of cannabis. The study, published in the Journal of Biochemical Pharmacology, was conducted to determine the effect of small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on heart protection. For this purpose, an experiment was performed using mice. According to the Israeli research center Felsenstein, "An extremely low dose of THC before ischemia (insufficient blood flow) is a safe and effective treatment that reduces ischemic damage to the myocardium (heart attack)." The researchers administered small amounts of THC (4 times less than the intoxicating amount) to mice before simulating a heart attack by restricting their blood flow. THC was administered at three different schedules: 2 hours before, 48 hours before, and 3 weeks before continuous treatment.

To assess the effect of THC in this study, the researchers observed a number of common and/or residual effects of heart attacks. In each THC program, the study reported improvement in each of the categories. Tetrahydrocannabinol has the upper hand in heart damage Fractional Shortening is a ratio used to objectively assess cardiac output levels. Observing this relationship, the researchers found that THC treatment led to an increase of 4.7%. Troponin T is a regulatory protein found in the heart muscle, which leaks into the bloodstream in the event of cardiovascular damage. Large amounts of it in the blood are often used to diagnose heart attacks. The researchers found that THC treatment reduced the amount of troponin T by an average of 4 nanograms per millilitre. The area of dead tissue created by insufficient blood flow was reduced by 6% after THC treatment. In cases where the blood is not able to reach a specific area, a heart attack can develop. This is an area where the tissue dies, due to a process called necrosis. The researchers measured the size of these infarcts and found that they decreased by 6% after THC treatment. Better heart health undoubtedly leads to a longer life. The above study states that an extremely low dose of THC can be beneficial in preparing for heart surgery. It could reduce the damage done to the patient and possibly help with recovery.
