Cannabis can help people with dementia!

Scientists are investigating whether an active ingredient in cannabis could actually exorcise dementia.

A team from Neuroscience Research in Australia is in the early stages of research into whether one of the main active ingredients in cannabis, called cannabidiol, could reverse some of the symptoms of memory loss in animals.

Tim Carl, a senior researcher on the team, said cannabidiol does not have the same psychoactive effects as the main ingredient in marijuana, THC, but has been found to provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and other effects and could be beneficial to the brain.

The hemp stated that it was used for medical purposes, until about 100 years ago but unfortunately as it often happens in our society, people decided it was a bad drug.

His study involved mice that were bred to have similar symptoms to those seen in Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Karl found that mice that received cannabidiol showed a dramatic improvement in object recognition and memory than others mice.

"It essentially restores the animals' performance back to the level of healthy animals," he said.

The study was conducted as part of David Cheng's Ph.D. student, who has collected samples of mouse brains and intends to examine them to see if they showed physical improvements.

As part of research presented at the Australian Neuroscience Society at its annual meeting in Melbourne this week, the team treated animal brain cells that produced a protein associated with the development of plaques in the brain in people with Alzheimer's disease, the precursor amyloid protein.

Dr. Karl said there had been reports in the medical literature of marijuana smokers who had developed Alzheimer's disease, and that they seemed to have been relieved of some of its symptoms.

Dementia is a term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of diseases that cause a gradual decline in a person's function. It is a general term used to describe the loss of memory, mentality, logic, sociability and what is considered normal emotional reactions.
